Blending with acrylic

By Fabienne VERCRUYSSE  •   2 minute read

Faire un fondu à l'acrylique pour tes fonds de toile !

Necessary material :

  1. Canvas or support of your choice
  2. Acrylic paints in the colors of your choice
  3. Brushes of different sizes (flat brushes or gradient brushes)
  4. Palette for mixing colors
  5. Water to clean brushes

Steps :

  1. Prepare your workspace: Make sure you have a clean, protected surface to avoid any damage. Place your canvas on an easel or stable surface.

  2. Choose your colors: Select the colors you want to use to create the fade. It is recommended to choose colors that mix well with each other.

  3. Mix colors: On your palette, mix colors so that they create a seamless transition between them. You can add a retarding acrylic medium to slow the drying of the paint and make mixing easier.

  4. Prepare the canvas: Apply a coat of base paint to the canvas. This can be a solid color or a mix of colors, whichever you prefer. Let dry completely.

  5. Moisten the canvas: Before applying the blending colors, you can lightly dampen the canvas with water using a spray bottle. This allows the paint to mix better.

  6. Apply the colors: Using a clean brush, load it with one of the colors you mixed. Apply color to the canvas where you want to begin the fade.

  7. Mix the colors: Immediately after applying the first color, take a clean, dry, or slightly damp, brush and begin to gently blend the color with the neighboring area. Work quickly to prevent the paint from drying.

  8. Repeat the process: Repeat these steps with the other colors, creating a smooth transition between each shade. Feel free to experiment with different brushing techniques to achieve the desired effect.

  9. Let Dry: Once you are happy with the blend, allow the paint to dry completely.

Remember, practice is the key to mastering the art of fading. Be creative and have fun with the process!
